Why this petition matters

Started by Carolyn Ross

A key decision will be made by Guelph City Council on June 14th which will determine if the Ontario Reformatory lands will include the necessary protection for future public enjoyment of its unique parkland. If they so choose, the City has the opportunity to protect key parts of this ecological gem and create a large urban green space that will be accessible to the public in perpetuity for current and future generations. As it stands, City Staff are recommending that only the buildings on the site be protected (through a Part 4 designation). However, the Guelph Heritage Committee, the Yorklands Greenhub, The Guelph Outdoor School, Wellington Water Watchers, and citizens alike are coming together to ask that the City make the decision to protect the lands as well through a Part 5 designation. By signing this petition, we bring together our voices, to protect these heritage assets and provide a greater chance of the Ontario Reformatory Lands remaining in the public realm.

We, the undersigned, call upon the Guelph City Council to adhere to the recommendations of the Guelph Heritage Committee and protect the Ontario Reformatory Lands with Part 4 and 5 Heritage designation, thereby securing it as a Heritage Conservation District for generations to come.
